Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre is the only Shire Horse stud farm in the UK open to the public, with up to 40 shires to see during the stud season. Out of season there are still over 20 shires, many of which are stabled during the winter months.
Alistair King first started breeding shire horses in the early 1970’s and today he is proud to share with you his prize winning horses. Over the years he has selected mares with substance to enhance his breeding programme but the greatest debt owed to the Cotebrook Stud was provided by his much loved and sadly missed stallion Moorfield Charles who died on 7th March 2004
Today much of the Shire Horse Centres show success is owed to his sons, daughters, granddaughters and great grandchildren, many of whom you will see at the centre, such as his daughters, Cotebrook Loch Carron and Cotebrook Charlies Angel, who was born the same day as Charlie passed away, and Cotebrook Charlies Spirit and Cotebrook Beth who are Charlies granddaughters.
In the last ten years Cotebrook has produced fourteen National or Reserve National Champions.
We now have two stallions, one of which out of only eight worldwide is a Super Premium Stallions. They attract visiting mares from all over the country. We also have facilities for artificial insemination and we export frozen semen abroad as far away as Australia and America.
Each year we have up to ten foals born between February and July. You can watch their births and follow their progress on our website "Foal Watch” videos.
We are pleased to share our fabulous Shire horses with you, either by visiting the centre or by partaking in a Shire Horse Experience or by adopting your favourite.
